Building the recovery. Advanced economies have left this "Great Recession" behind, and the signs of recovery have become more widespread and convincing, but the process is proving protracted and gradual rather than robust and assertive. We look at the progress achieved so far and the chances of future success in building this recovery. In particular, we consider how successful different countries have been in trying to position themselves more competitively and go through the checklist of structural reforms -both implemented and planned - that can help them improve their prospects. We also turn our attention to longer-term issues, addressing demographic metrics and breaking down growth potential into its essential constituent factors.
Our dual perspective on the present economic challenges. Like in previous editions, in this report we analyse the situation following a two-pronged approach, trying to isolate the most salient thematic issues from a transversal, cross-country perspective, and also going into deep-dive mode for each of the geographies involved.
Macro themes. We direct our economic macro-scope to shed some light on what we find to be some of the most interesting aspects of the present economic situation, with a particular focus on the European economy:
Current account, competitiveness, margins and investment flows
Money and credit
Inflation
Fiscal metrics
Population issues, a new topic we introduce to consider the economic consequences of demographic trends
Deconstructing growth models, also a new topic.
Geographical deep-dives. We take a closer look at the specifics of the main economies in the region and those framing the global conditions in which Europe operates, and present a full macroeconomic forecast for the countries covered, as well a summary of the structural reform initiatives in some of the main countries:
A general framework of analysis for the Euro zone
An in-depth review of Spain and a detailed discussion of Portugal
A detailed look at each of the other major countries in the Euro zone: Germany, France and Italy
An assessment of the UK economy
An analysis of the US economy
Some of the main features of the global scenario
